a time when Petter won before the finish...

Postby JeffOYB » Wed Feb 06, 2019 8:22 am

I recall a couple cool times when Petter won the sprint against his rivals about a half-km away from the finish line then coasted in.

Here is one of them:

...But this might not be his most memorable race win in this fashion. I haven't located that one yet -- it's when he came up from behind and the 2 leaders were visibly deflated.

Yeah his finishing was amazing. Won many times on that. Turns out part of his weapon was extra stiff skis to ensure good glide for the sprint finish (less contact surface).

Now that Petter has retired Klaebo has taken over as the super finisher, although there are many good now: Pellegrino, Krogh, Bolshunov, Ustyugov, Chanavat, Jouve, Harvey.

Jeff, have a look at this over at the Fasterskier site for a bit of retrospective of Northugs finer moments. You may find the clip you're looking for.

Very nice article.

Northug was huge for interest and sponsor wise, something becoming more clear now that he retired. Of course there's a general downward trend with most sports (except biathlon it seems), but there's been a marked step down in interest as seen by number of articles in the media:
