Madison Sprints

Postby Biffbradford » Sun Feb 03, 2008 9:24 am

Was anyone there? I got there a little late, just catching the end of the women's freestyle sprint on Saturday ... staying through about half the highschool relays.

Parking was easy (I parked less than one block off the course!) and the start/finish was easy to find. The PA system worked well, you could hear the announcers over the whole course and they did a great job. I finally recognized one of the two announcers as being from the old (late 80's) video made from Northern Michigan University on skate technique, but I don't know his name off hand. Anyway, I thought they did a great job. One was one always at the S/F line, the other on the first/last turn to comment on parts of the course that you couldn't see from the line. Awards were done immediately after the race was complete so the skiers were still warm and it kept the program moving right along.

The track was soft, but skiers didn't have any trouble with the freestyle technique (how was classic today - Sunday?) Access to see the racers was excellent and the crowd size was pretty good, I thought.

The racing was excellent, with many top skiers attending, and just a little Euro flavor with several skiers from the international scene. The women's race (what little I cought of it) was fun to watch, the men's race was pretty close right to the end with several lead changes, and the highschool relays had a big field with some good skiers. I was impressed with the size of the HS teams that showed up, I bet some teams had 12 to 15 skiers present, all in their team colors. I noticed that Wausau was staying at the Best Western Hotel right on the course ... how nice was that? They came out of the hotel, put on their skis, and went! They had someone with a waxing table right off the sidewalk and their coach was right there too.

I forget which race this was (3 hours sleep will do that):

I found the 90 mile trip, on just 3 hours sleep, well worth it and it was good preparation for my Birkie photo shoot later this month. Pics and video hopefully posted later today, or tomorrow.

:D

Were there really 10,000 spectators John?

Tuff call. There were a LOT of spectators along the whole course, certainly over the two day period there were that many.

RACE VIDEO! :

I had to break it into two parts.

There is a third part which is the podium ceremony, but I'm having trouble getting it to show up. I've uploaded it three times and it's still not showing up, but I'll get it straightened out eventually. I still have part of the women's race, the women's podium ceremony, and some of the high school races to upload yet.

:-)

(edit: OH! I see that part 3 is showing up now ... COOL!)

I'm working on another YouTube video from these races ... I've got the intro and first minute done (version 6) ... here's a preview:

I'm going to change the pics at the end to something more rapid fire, then it's a transition to a different song, but I've got to put this aside for a few days and get a life ! :D

I'm doing this on a clunky 667mhz computer, so now I'm thinking I've got to upgrade after the Birkie.

Tell me what you think so far.
