Skiing on/near Mt. Rogers in SW Virginia?

Post by Clay.Nichols » Fri Oct 21, 2011 5:42 pm

I've been wanting to try out the SC Skiing near Mt. Rogers (highest point in Virginia).

I live in Blacksburg (about 1.5 to 2 hrs away). I've got a few tips from Southern Snow (out of print book). It recommends:

* Virginia Highlands Horse trail (starts @ 4,450 ft Elk Garen Gap on VA 600)
* Starting where the road into Grayson Highlands is gated @ Massie Gap.

I've not been there before but I'm hoping to do a little Mt. Biking there before the snow (hopefully) hits.

Anyone skied there and have suggestions?
Anyone *want* to go sometime this winter?

Beautiful area! I don't know about skiing there, but I have hiked and bike in the area a little when I live down south. I would think that the Virginia Creeper trail would be good for moderate skiing when/if there is enough snow. Also, perhaps parts of the Iron Mountain trail (I think that's what it's called), which is the old route of the AT.
