Making an avatar ...

Postby Biffbradford » Mon Feb 11, 2008 5:30 am

I'm trying to make an avatar from a picture of mine.

I'm told that it must be under 10kb ... so I shrink and shrink.

I'm down to 6x7 pixels and still at 19kb.

It's only a DOT !

Image <----- THIS IS MY AVATAR.

Any tips???

Are you saving it as a 72 ppi jpg? Also use your image editing software to "Save for Web" (Photoshop) or send as a low res email file or save as a jpg with lower quality. Any of these will strip unneeded data and reduce file size but still allow a decent sized pixel count.

Start over.
Download irfanview.com

It's easy. Downsize to 80 pixels or what-ever the site allows. You can cut an appropriate part out, and paste again to have the zoomed view.
When saving, you can adjust quality (data compression). You will succeed.

Well, in fact I am using IrfanView (my favorite).

This is 71x80, 2 dpi ... still 24kb! (limit is 10kb)

I may not use this exact picture ... it's kind of my "Allah Akbar" look.
